Microsoft VDI with Citrix XenDesktop™ provides a dynamic IT environment that uses desktop
virtualization to centralize employee desktops, helps increase data security, and
provide greater operational flexibility. Citrix XenDesktop™, running on Windows
Server 2008 with Microsoft Hyper-V™ and integrated with Microsoft System Center
Virtual Machine Manager™, greatly simplifies desktop lifecycle management and helps
reduce the cost of ownership of a virtual desktop infrastructure by separating the
delivery of the desktop OS, applications and user settings.

Citrix XenApp™ is a Windows(r) application delivery system that manages applications
in the datacenter and delivers them as an on-demand service to users anywhere using
any device. XenApp reduces the cost of application management by up to 50 percent,
delivers any application instantly to users anywhere and improves application and
data security. Citrix XenApp is built on Microsoft's Remote Desktop Services (formerly Microsoft Terminal Services) and
uses that technology to deliver virtualized applications at the presentation level to the end user.
Citrix XenApp and Microsoft Terminal Services: Feature Analysis
Application Virtualization
Application virtualization decouples applications from the operating system and enables them to run as network services. Application virtualization can be layered on top of other virtualization technologies—network, storage, machine—to create a fully virtual IT environment where computing resources can be dynamically allocated in real-time based on real-time needs.
Microsoft’s App-V provides key application virtualization features that support a flexible application delivery environment and can complement a desktop and presentation virtualization environment with key added features, including:
- Applications are no longer installed on the client—and there is minimal impact on the host operating system or other applications.
- Applications are rapidly delivered, when needed, to laptops, desktops, and terminal servers.
- Microsoft App-V Application Virtualization can help reduce the complexities inherent in enterprise application management by reducing challenges and transform a customer’s computing environment into a dynamic, services-oriented infrastructure.
